Found Family
In the stories we read and in life, many of us connect to the idea of a found family or a chosen family—a group of people committed to each other not because they are related by blood or family ties, but because they have found in one another deep and lasting community. As the saying goes, “Friends are the family you choose.” The story of the Gospel is that while we were still enemies of God, he came and found us, inviting us to be adopted into his family, the family of God, the church. As Anglican theologian J.I. Packer writes in his book Knowing God, the primary metaphor used to describe salvation in the Bible is adoption. The point of the incarnation, the cross, the resurrection, and everything else God did in Christ and the Spirit is doing in the world is so that we can be part of his family again. If friends are the family we choose, then the church is the family God chooses. And are we glad that he did! I was once lost but now I’m found, and the church is the family I’ve been found with. The design features the building of a church in the background, and a diverse and scrappy group of the people of the church in the foreground. May all of us former orphans learn more and more how to love each other like our Father loves us.
