The Good Shepherd Minimal Icon
This design is in collaboration with artist Evelea Flynn and her series of minimal icons. Evelea grew up in our parish and with her parents gave a print of this icon to us to mark the birth of our fourth child, whose middle name is Shepherd.
Jesus as the Good Shepherd is one of our most ancient depictions of Jesus, dating back to the catacombs in Rome from the 2nd or 3rd century. This icon follows the orthodox tradition of “Christ the Good Shepherd”, showing Jesus carrying a sheep around his shoulders, recalling several Scripture passages: —Ezekiel 34 where God judges the shepherds of Israel and declares that he himself will come and gather his scattered flock and care for them. —Isaiah 40:11 where God says he will carry his sheep in his arms —John 10 where Jesus says “I am the Good Shepherd” that lays down his life for his sheep —Luke 15:3–7 and Matthew 18:12–14 where Jesus tells the parable of the shepherd who leaves the other 99 to find the lost sheep, carrying it home on his shoulders.

About the Shirt:
