Via Media is a latin phrase that means “the middle way.” It’s a popular way of describing the Anglican church’s approach to the reformation. In the 16th century, Anglican priest Richard Hooker wrote that Anglicanism was seeking to retain the best of Roman Catholicism (like the liturgy and bishops) and incorporate the best of reformation Protestantism (like the authority of Scripture).
The goal of the reformers in the reformation throughout Europe was not to ignore the first 1,500 years of the church, but to seek to be faithful to those first generations of the church and how they read the Bible and practiced their faith.
In our parish, we’ve seen those from evangelical backgrounds enriched as they are invited into the Sacraments and those from catholic backgrounds enriched as they are invited deeper into the Word.
The design features a road through the forest as a metaphor for this way of being a Christian.
About the Shirt:
