Therefore Let Us Keep the Feast
Near the end of the communion prayers, the liturgy directly quotes 1 Corinthians 5:7-8. The priest says, “Alleluia! Christ our passover has been sacrificed for us!” The congregation replies with joy, “Therefore let us keep the feast! Alleluia!” 

One of my favorite moments of the year is when we say these lines of Easter Sunday. After a season of prayer, fasting, and repentance, and after our journey through Holy Week, I always resonate with the words from Zephaniah 3:18 that we read during the Easter Vigil, that the Lord “will gather those of you who mourn for the festival.” We also have been refraining from saying the word “alleluia” during Lent. At the beginning of the service, we announce Jesus’ resurrection and shout “Alleluia” for the first time in six weeks as part of what the prayer book calls the Holy Noise. Then when we get to this first eucharist of Easter, and we say Alleluia, our congregation often erupts in another round of holy noise. We all long to keep the feast of the marriage supper of the lamb. Alleluia!
