Lex Orandi, Lex Credendi

Lex Orandi Lex Credendi
This latin phrase captures the beautiful relationship between what we believe and how we pray. Lex means the 'way' or 'rule'. Orandi means 'prayer'. And credendi means 'belief'. The phrase was originally written by Prosper of Aquitaine in the 5th century to argue that the church's worship expresses and preserves what she believes about God. The way we worship also shapes the way we believe.

What we do in our daily and Sunday worship together is vitally important. Another idea is sometimes included: Lex orandi, Lex credendi, Lex vivendi. As we pray, so we believe; as we believe, so we live. In a culture where worship can sometimes be shallow, faith can stay shallow, and our lives can be deprived of the faith to deeply love and sacrifice for the kingdom of God. 

In the liturgy and sacraments of the great tradition, our faith is being shaped and strengthened with depth, fidelity, and beauty. Our worship isn't what we come up with each week, it's rooted in the worship of the early church, the worship of the people of Israel, and has formed faithful Christians throughout the ages and across the world. 

The design features a woodcut style image of an ancient saint crafting a cross on his workbench as a metaphor for how the saints have passed on a tradition of the church that forms us more into a cross-shaped life.
