Do You Even Lift, Bro?
A trendy weightlifting phrase: "do you even lift, bro?" When a friend wore a shirt with a picture of Shakespeare that said, "Dost thou even lift, bro?" we knew we had to do a liturgical version with a crucifer—the person who holds the cross during the processional.
The procession that begins a traditional wroship service mirrors the great Bible passages about processions—like the victory procession of Psalm 118, the Triumphal Entry of Jesus to begin Holy Week, and the description of the heavenly procession to the new Jerusalem in Hebrews 12. The crucifer carries the cross near the beginning of the procession, recalling Jesus' words from John 12:32, "And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” We physically lift high the cross, as the great hymn says, but we also do so sacramentally when we live lives of servanthood and sacrifice for the kingdom of God.
One Easter Vigil many years ago, after the announcement of 'Alleluia, Christ is Risen', the crucifer in our church spontaneously ran to get the cross, walked to the center of the room, and lifted it up high in celebration and worship, and the congregation cheered with a holy noise. That's the kind of lift we can all use!
