The Mystery of Faith

This summary moment after the words of institution (This is my body…this is my body) was common in ancient liturgies from the eastern church and is widespread in communion liturgies today. The summary usually quotes 1 Corinthians 11:26 in some way: “For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.”

The wording used on this shirt was part of the Roman Catholic liturgy introduced by Pope John Paul IV in the early 1970s: “Therefore we proclaim the mystery of fath: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.” 

These three statements form a kind of past, present, and future summary of the work of Jesus. Christ has died and Christ is Risen are both found in 1st Corinthians 15:3 ("Christ died for our sins") and 1 Corinthians 15:4 ("he was raised on the third day"). Christ will come again echoes the words of the angels in the ascension in Acts 1:11 ("This Jesus... will come in the same way"). In remembering what Jesus has done in the past, and that he is with us now in the present working in and through us, our faith grows for what he is yet to do in the future. We experience the truth of Hebrews 13:8 that “Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever.” 

The design features a modern icon of Jesus ascended into heaven, with angels on either side, as the disciples and Mary worship and wave palm branches below, recalling the scene of Acts 1:11 where the angels tell the disciples, “This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”
